Interiors writer Rebecca Proctor’s new book, ‘1000 New Eco designs‘, has just been published this week, and it includes Pli’s Hoop table, which was one of the first designs we developed for large-scale production. The Hoop table represented the very best eco design Pli was capable of at the time of making; we have had a lot of interest in the table again, from the media coverage of Rebecca’s excellent book.

The Hoop table has been superseded by the new Whitechapel table collection which Pli launched this month. We took all the feedback and advice we received from selling the Hoop table over the years and combined it with our new thinking on sustainable manufacturing techniques.

The Whitechapel collection presents some significant advantages over the Hoop table: the solid bamboo table surface is stronger and offers more surface area for the price. The painted steel legs have a much lower carbon-footprint than the Hoop’s aluminium legs, plus they give us the opportunity to offer different colours and configurations. The Whitechapel collection includes single-level and double-level occasional tables and a higher side-table with shelf which can also be used as a bedside table. A large dining table will be issued soon.

So if you liked the Hoop table, you’ll love the Whitechapel collection, too, and you’ll be safe in the knowledge that these designs represent another step forward in the development of affordable, eco-friendly furniture.

The Christmas edition of T3, a popular gadget magazine, features the Reee chair among a line-up of the top eco-friendly and innovative products a gadget-lover can buy (page 174). As T3 says, “Saving the planet, one room at a time.”

The November/December edition of Develop3D Magazine has a focus on sustainable design, including a double-page spread about the Reee chair. The project leaders from Pli and Sprout discuss the computer aided design work that went into the Reee chair design and development. The article also discusses the ways that CAD software can assist design for sustainable materials like recycled plastic.

Last week Christopher was interviewed by Colles Stowell, from SolidWorks Podcast, on sustainable design. SolidWorks is large international software company that developed the 3D modelling programme that was used to design the Reee chair. It was great to be recognised by SolidWorks as an innovative user of their product. In this 5 minute interview Christopher explains Pli’s philosophy and experiences of sustainable design along with a great run-down on the history behind the Reee chair. It is a good listen and if you are into a bit of elevator jazz the intro is a must. Enjoy.

It’s great that they have recognised Sprout’s excellent work on the ergonomics of the Reee chair, which can be overlooked when people focus on the environmental credentials alone. An eco-friendly chair is no use if nobody wants to sit on it and the Reee chair is first and foremost a useful and comfortable piece of furniture.

London Interiors Magazine has made its June 08 edition into the “Eco Issue” and they have profiled Pli and the Reee Chair.

In January 08, Pli exhibited at the Interiors Birmingham Exhibition and fortunately we were able to secure a bit of air time on the show’s TV network. The clip is about strengthening the role of environmental furniture in the British furniture industry. Enjoy.
