Here’s a link to Home-air-purifier-expert.com, a site which goes some way towards explaining the reason why Pli adds no formaldehyde to any of our products, in glues, binders, fillers, coatings or paints… (via Treehugger). Exposure times to industrial emissions of formaldehyde are limited by law. Prolonged exposure even to small quantities of formaldehyde is thought to cause health problems.

Pli has just brought out a longer version of the Grass media table, appropriately called the Long table. It’s 2.4 metres long (or wide, depending how you look at it) - that’s 2400 millimetres of media equipment, files, books, bottles, wedding presents, bowls and flatmates you can store on its unbroken bamboo surface. You can learn more about the design here (click on the image)…

April 2002 saw the arrival of one of those rare books that stays interesting and relevant long after its publication. It seemed to have an instant impact on the small world of sustainable design. But looking back it’s better described as a slow-burner: its impact is still apparent as the issues it discussed are shouldered by a growing community of designers.
I bought my copy of Cradle to Cradle a year later, in April 2003. It’s been a touchstone ever since: at Pli, terms like ‘downcycling’ and ‘nutrients’ still permeate our discussions.
Here’s a question for you: if you have read Cradle to Cradle, what have you done that you can say is a direct result of the ideas you came across in its rather heavy plastic pages?

I only ever thought it was a dusty/damp home that could be bad for my lungs, but now I realise that the sweet smell of “home” could be having a real big effect on my health.(see this article in Treehugger ) Everything from furniture to cleaning products or even not opening the window regularly can lead to a scarily high level of pollutants floating around in the air I breath.
Pollution from power plants, cars, and other transportation is a well-known contributor to outdoor air pollution, but indoor air pollution is often worse; it can be up to 10 times worse for you than the air outside. Microbial pollutants like mold, pet dander and plant pollen can combine with chemicals like radon and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to create a pretty toxic environment in your home; since we spend an average of 90% of our time indoors and 65% of our time inside our homes, according to the National Safety Council that can add up to allergies, asthma and worse.

The Grass cabinet had a write up in this weekend’s Sunday Times Home section.
The green room
Not many cabinets can take all your entertainment kit, including cables, or have hinges that allow the doors to open 170 degrees. This one can, and it’s ecofriendly, too. Made from bamboo, with a wheat strawboard backing – both sustainable resources – it contains neither wood nor formaldehyde and uses low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) glues and binders.

After a year’s design and development, Pli has started selling our Grass tables. The project was simple - to create a stylish collection of tables made from sustainable materials. Bamboo, straw and aluminium did the trick.

Pli exhibited the Hoop and Grass tables at the [re]design exhibition. This is its second year and it has grown enormously. As before, the exposure to thousands of interested and enthusiastic visitors has given us a huge boost. This is the only annual exhibition Pli is committed to: we’ll be back in 2007.
